Just Got Engaged? The First 3 Decisions That Actually Matter
October 14, 2026

You just said yes, honey, to the love of your life. You are just engaged. Sit in that for a second. It is a good place to be.
Then the questions start. When is the date. Where is the venue. Have you picked colors. Everyone means well. And before you know it, you are making the biggest decisions of the wedding before you have had a chance to enjoy being engaged.
If you search what to do after getting engaged, you will get a familiar list. Celebrate. Tell your family. Insure the ring. Start a Pinterest board. Set a date. Book a venue. Most of that list is fine. But the order is backwards. And the order is everything.
Here is what we tell our couples at SK Worldwide. There is a right order to this. And most couples get it backwards, starting with the decisions that cost the most and carry the most stress.
These are the first three decisions that actually matter.
1. Pick a season, not a date.
A date locks you in before you know what you want. A season gives you room.
The season decides the light, the flowers, the menu, and how your guests feel. Fall in Tulsa feels different from spring in Tulsa. Summer in Italy feels different from winter in Italy. A garden party in May asks for something completely different than a candlelit dinner in December.
A date also locks you into pricing and availability before you understand either one. A season lets you compare. It lets you choose the experience first and the calendar second.
So talk about the feeling before you talk about the day. What season feels like you. What do you want the air to feel like. What do you want dinner to taste like. What do you want your guests to wear and how do you want them to get there. Choose the feeling first. The date comes later.
2. Get your guest count before your venue.
This is the decision that shapes everything else. Your guest count decides your venue, your budget, your rentals, your seating, your timeline, and your catering. It is the number every other number comes from.
Here is the mistake we see most. A couple books a venue for one hundred, then builds a list of one hundred and fifty. Now they are paying for it twice, once in money and once in stress. The venue is too small. The budget is blown. The guest list becomes a fight.
Make the list first. Even a rough one. Start with the people you cannot imagine the day without. Then the family you need to include. Then the friends who actually know your story. Talk honestly about kids, plus ones, and coworkers. You do not have to finalize it today. But you need a real number before you go find the room that holds the people you actually love.
And know this. A venue’s capacity is not the same as a comfortable capacity. A room that holds two hundred chairs does not mean two hundred guests will enjoy being in it. Ask how the room feels full, not just how many it fits.
3. Know your real budget, and bring in your planner before you sign anything.
Be honest about what you can spend. Not what you wish you could spend. What you can spend.
A real budget is a total, not a wish list. It includes the things people forget: taxes, service fees, delivery and setup, rentals, alterations, gratuities, and the little costs that add up to a second wedding if nobody is watching them. When you know the total, you can decide where the money belongs. Some things deserve more. Some things do not need more money. Knowing the difference is the whole game.
And before you sign a single contract, talk to a planner. This is the part most couples get backwards, and it is the most expensive one to get wrong. A planner cannot undo an agreement you already signed. But a planner can tell you which agreement is worth signing, which venue fits your count and your season, and where your money actually belongs. That is why we say engaged, then planner, then team. Not venue, then vendors, then panic, then planner.
Here is the truth underneath all three.
Planning does not change people. It reveals them. The wedding is monumental, so everything hits harder. The opinions get louder. The family dynamics get sharper. The small things start to feel big.
That is normal. It does not mean something is wrong with you, or with them. It means you need a team who sees it before it becomes a timeline disaster. A team that holds the whole thing so you do not have to.
That is what we do at SK. We carry the details, the dynamics, and the day, so you get to be present for it.
You do not have to carry this. You get to be involved in the beautiful parts. The dress. The tasting. Imagining the weekend. Without becoming the project manager. That is what we are here for.
And your guests? They will feel considered from the very start. That is the SK way.
